How many times should you meet with your academic advisor? ›

The vast majority of universities recommend meeting your academic advisor at least once a semester. There may be times when you need to speak to them more often than that, but you shouldn't leave too long between advising sessions.

Advisors have a better shot at matching students with new opportunities when they know something about them and their interests. Discussing your strengths and weaknesses and your likes and dislikes will help them draw you a personalized roadmap through the curriculum.

Introduce yourself

Simply giving your preferred name, year, major, and the course you're enrolled in can provide a great deal of context.

This can be an especially important step, as sending an email with high-quality writing can help you appear professional. It can also show your adviser that you're taking your education seriously and are genuinely interested in the expertise they can share with you.

They provide more than just advice on your classes

Your advisor is someone you can turn to in a time of need. They're a great resource when it comes to professional advice as well.

What skills will this major help me develop? How many classes should I take every semester? What kind of careers can I pursue with a degree in this major? Do you think I need to get a higher degree?

Keep your email professional

Address your recipient by title and last name (Dear Professor Interesting) Use full sentences and proper grammar, avoiding slang and emojis. Keep the tone of your email courteous. End with a concluding phrase and your name (Sincerely, Juan Pupil)

You should meet with your advisor at least once a year to reassess basics like budget, taxes and investment performance. This is the time to discuss whether you feel you are on the right track, and if there is something you could be doing better to increase your net worth in the coming 12 months.

You should expect to have four meetings with your academic mentor in each year of your studies. It is important you take up the offer of these mentoring meetings.

2.3. 1 As a minimum, Academic Mentors are expected to offer their student mentees the opportunity to hold four formally recorded meetings within an academic year.

A typical advisory board in some organizations may meet only once or twice a year. This less frequent schedule reflects the narrower scope of issues they address compared to a full board of directors. Their meetings tend to be shorter as well, focusing on specific topics or challenges the organization faces.
